Penciling for Comics: Background and Object Design with Dave Ross

Dave Ross

In this workshop series, students will be introduced to the step-by-step procedures involved in the ‘art’ of illustrating comic books: Script Breakdowns, Page and Panel Design, and the ‘Roughing Out’ of story sequences through to the finished ‘Pencils’ stage. Workshops will include sessions on technical perspective, the placement of characters into environments, folds in clothing, lighting for dramatic effect and the Do’s and Dont’s of using photo reference.

Note: There will be an extended version of this offered in the Spring.

Dave Ross has drawn for Marvel Comics and DC Comics on “Captain America,” “Spiderman,” “Batgirl,” “Star Trek,” “Daredevil,” “Birds of Prey” and “JLA: Act of God,” among many other projects. He was also an artist for the series “Rai” at Valiant,” and has worked as a concept designer and layout artist for animation.
