Animation Students Need A Deeper Skill Base Now Than Ever Before

Th study of animation now includes a deeper skill base than ever before! To be equipped to work on the most interesting projects, incoming Max the Mutt students must have the primary goal of animating, and must think in terms of four years. More than 4 years, really, because our Advanced Diploma in 3D Computer Animation and Production starts early and ends late, and now we are giving serious thought to allowing students to stay on until the end of July to add more to demo reels, and get mentored , with graduation and industry evening scheduled for late August.

We are rededicating ourselves to character animation, adding an animation course to year one, adding hours to classical animation courses in years two and three, and, for those students going on to year 4, introducing 3D computer animation in addition to 2d computer animation in year 3.

There will also be more acting, and more drawing for animation. We are very excited about all the new ideas that are being incorporated into the program, and grateful to all the professionals who are contributing their time and energy to rethinking animation education at Max the Mutt.

Second Year Animation Student Daniel Racelis Attends Graduation To Cheer On ‘09 Grads

I thought I would just stop by to share my experiences at the Year 3 & 4 Graduation Show and Showcase of the Year 2 Animation/Concept Art/Illustration.

Another year has passed by so quickly, and I hope all you current students at Max had a successful year. As well, to all teachers, I hope you all had an enjoyable year teaching and hope to see you back in September.

I would just like to share with you all my experience at this year’s graduation show for the 3rd year and 4th year students. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate this year’s graduating class, wish them all the best and luck in their future endeavors. To all the graduating 3rd year students, it was a pleasure entering the school at the same time as you, and I am truly impressed by the hard work you put in your final films, even though you only had 3 weeks to put it all together. Kudos.

To the 4th year students, I was truly in awe at all of your 3D projects on display in the theater, especially the short films you all produced. The quality of work produced just blew me away. If you can, I urge you all in this group to go to the school to see the films that were produced. Sitting in there watching both 3rd and 4 year films, along with newly graduate and close friend, Richard Truong, gave me an excitement and inspiration into creating my own short film. I can’t wait to produce mine!

The 2nd Year Showcase was just as awe-inspiring as watching the films. The level of quality in the 2nd year’s was totally beyond what I had expected. Just the amount of work displayed from all 3 programs was enough to keep me at school for hours ( I had arrived at 5PM), to just look through the student work. It was that much!

I encourage all students who have finished year 1, and those of you who are about to attend Max the Mutt, to go to the Open House and get a preview of work you will produce in Year 2 and Year 3.

Aside from that, I hope you all keep doing what you love to do, which is DRAW (DUH!), party hard, but have a safe summer. And to the recent grads, all the best!

~Daniel Racelis

Maxine’s column for Feb. 18th -What is Video Game Art and Design?

Concept Art… Art and Design…Media Art and Design…Video Game Art and Design…   It really can get confusing - there are so many words and titles used for the same things.

Max the Mutt is a Career College offering a four year Diploma Program in  Concept Art as well as other diploma programs. That is, our college focuses on “art and design.”  In fact, all of our programs concentrate on giving students a solid skill base.

Some schools offer “game design” programs (diploma or degree) that include some courses in concept art ( also known as video game art design).  However, concept art is a career that demands deep drawing and painting skills in addition to concept specific courses and it’s doubtful that in 3 or 4 years any program can adequately teach both!  That’s why we don’t teach “game design.”

“Concept Art” can be used to refer to “Design For Animation” as well as “Design for Video Games,”  although  recently  it seems  often to be used  to refer to the background, character and prop design for video games.

We want our students to have a broad-based concept art education that will give them flexibility in the workplace now and in the future.  That’s why our college’s concept art program includes Concept Art for Animation as well as 2D and 3D game design!  Our Concept Art graduates will be employable in both industries. We’ve  already had numerous visits from major video game companies, and our animation grads are working for EA and UbiSoft as concept artists, animators, and lighting specialists

Max The Mutt Animation School Toronto.

Recent Field Trip to the Mounted Police stables and the Royal Winter Fair have provided our students with the opportunities to draw and interact with the animals. Students presently involved in the Animal drawing course have learned how to capture moving animals in quick gestures - based on knowledge learned about dynamic anatomy.
